Effects of Microstructure on Mechanical Properties of Quasicrystalline Al–Ni–Fe Alloys

Abstract. The effects of microstructure on the mechanical properties of as-cast Al72Ni13Fe15 and Al72Ni23Fe5 alloys were investigated. These alloys were composed of decagonal quasicrystalline D-phase coexisting with Al-based intermetallics. The mechanical properties were characterized by means of microhardness indentation at room temperature. Fracture mode was examined by scanning electron microscopy. The ductility of the alloys tended to decrease with increasing iron content.
